He racked up 100 film and television roles in all, including Midnight Express, The Getaway and White Lightning. In later life, he pivoted to screen heroes, playing a sheriff in From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money.
Hopkins was adopted at nine months and had a tough childhood but gained an acting scholarship after a stint in the US Army.
His birth name was William, nicknamed Billy growing up, but changed his name to Bo at the suggestion of a theatre producer in New York.
He bore witness to his father’s fatal heart attack as a boy and was sent to live with his grandparents after having a rocky relationship with his new step-father.
He died of a heart attack and is survived by his second wife, Sian Green, their son Matthew and daughter Jane.
