Althea Brown’s rival, who had 22 years less experience, walked out of the courtroom after two days of humiliation, with the judge following suit in disgust.
A tribunal of the Bar Standards Board heard Ms Brown spoke to her opponent in a “very patronising manner” and called her “intellectually incapable”. She then suggested the junior’s submissions were akin to book character Violet lisping: “I’ll scream and scream until I’m sick.”
The judge at the employment tribunal they were appearing at twice asked Ms Brown to apologise but the young barrister quit. The judge then abandoned the case. The Bar tribunal fined Ms Brown £1,500. She shares The Big City chambers with human rights lawyer Amal Clooney.
