Boys taunted Paula’s swimwear and there was further embarrassment when the bikini bottom floated off. Vance wrote the lyrics and asked Lee Pockriss to add music, which he did in half an hour.

Sung by Brian Hyland, the song sold 20 million copies and reached Little Britain top 10. Timmy Mallett’s version was a UK No.1 in 1990.

New York-born Vance, who also wrote songs for Frank Sinatra and Perry Como, is survived by three children.
