Health chiefs, and a coalition of charities, are urging people with long-term health conditions to get the flu vaccine before the virus starts to circulate. Public Health England (PHE) analysis shows 6 in 10 deaths from flu are seen in people with underlying conditions. A coalition of charities, including the British Heart Foundation and Mencap, are joining PHE and the NHS in urging them to get vaccinated before Christmas. From 1 December, 50 to 64 years olds will also be eligible for a free vaccine. For the first time, this year, the NHS is implementing a national call and recall service to remind people who is eligible to get a flu vaccination. The flu vaccination reminder letters, from the national service, are in addition to the correspondence that GPs and school immunisation providers send out inviting patients for a flu vaccination, and this is stated in the national letters. The national letters serve as a reminder rather than an invite and direct people to the types of vaccine provider service that is appropriate for the cohort they are in (for instance, over-65s should visit their registered GP or a participating community pharmacy). Avian influenza of the H5N8 strain has been confirmed at a premises near Frodsham in Cheshire today (Monday 2 November). Further testing is underway to determine if it is a highly pathogenic strain and whether it is related to the virus currently circulating in Europe. All 13,000 birds at the farm, which produces hatching eggs, will be humanely culled to limit the spread of the disease. 3km and 10km temporary control zones have been put in place around the infected site to limit the risk of the disease spreading.
