Shared Grief After 9/11: Sister of WTC Victim Meets Afghan Who Lost 19 Family Members in U.S. Attack

On the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, we revisit a conversation we hosted in January of 2002 between Masuda Sultan, an Afghan American woman who lost 19 members of her family in a U.S. air raid, and Rita Lasar, a New Yorker who lost her brother in the World Trade Center attack. Lasar would become an active member of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows. Masuda later wrote the memoir, “My War at Home.” Source link

Labour just lost a councillor but it’s a ‘breakthrough’ for another party

Support us and go ad-freeA Labour councillor has defected to an up-and-coming political party. The move may not be a surprise given Keir Starmer’s woeful leadership. But it does show how the new political party is already resonating with people. Enter Breakthrough As The Canary previously reported, the Breakthrough Party launched in January 2021. Alex Mays founded it. You can read all about Breakthrough here. But as Mays told The Canary: We are a new home for those determined to disrupt the failed status quo and build an alternative. It’s a society that uses its considerable wealth to provide dignity, security and justice for all. We see hope not in Westminster. We see…

Voter apathy lost Labour Hartlepool, not Jeremy Corbyn

The Tories won the Hartlepool by-election by a fairly large majority. The kickback within the Labour Party, along with possible analysis, has been swift. But the real story of the by-election was not that Labour lost because of Jeremy Corbyn’s legacy. It was that people in their thousands simply didn’t vote. Not that this problem is anything new. Hartlepool turned blue The result on the Hartlepool by-election that was held on 6 May was as follows: Hartlepool, parliamentary by-election result: Con: 51.9% (+23.0)Lab: 28.7% (-9.0)Ind: 9.7% (+7.5)RefUK: 1.2% (-24.6)Grn: 1.2% (+1.2)LDem: 1.2% (-3.0)Oth: 6.1% (+4.9) Con GAIN from Lab. — Britain Elects (@BritainElects) May 7, 2021 So, Labour…

Now, more than ever, we need a vibrant, independent media that holds the government to account and calls it out when it puts vested economic interests above human lives. We need a media that shows solidarity with the people most affected by the crisis – and one that can help to build a world based on collaboration and compassion. We have been fighting against an…

Activist Who Lost Father to COVID Says Trump’s White House Photo Op Was Like “Sci-Fi Horror Film”

As the highest-profile coronavirus patient in the world returns to the White House while still infectious and a danger to others, we speak with activist Kristin Urquiza, whose father died from COVID-19 earlier this year. She says President Trump’s minimizing of the disease is a slap in the face to families who have lost loved ones. “I was appalled,” says Urquiza. “Every single person out there who’s lost a loved one to COVID, who has seen up close and personal what this virus can do, felt the same way.” Urquiza, who spoke at the Democratic National Convention in August about her father, is co-founder of Marked by COVID,…

SUCH A LOSER! Sleepy Joe lost debate ‘badly’ says Trump at Minnesota rally

SLEEPY Joe Biden lost the first debate says US President Donald Trump. The President made the remarks as he held his first campaign rally since the first presidential debate against Democrat challenger Joe Biden. Trump said he had held Joe Biden accountable for his ’47 years of failure,’ and for “for shipping your jobs and dreams aboard and for bowing to the violent mob at home,” while speaking to supporters at the rally in Duluth, Minnesota on Wednesday. “Joe Biden is too weak to lead this country. You know Biden lost badly when his supporters are saying he should cancel the rest of the debates. Now I understand he is canceling the…
