Shared Grief After 9/11: Sister of WTC Victim Meets Afghan Who Lost 19 Family Members in U.S. Attack

On the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, we revisit a conversation we hosted in January of 2002 between Masuda Sultan, an Afghan American woman who lost 19 members of her family in a U.S. air raid, and Rita Lasar, a New Yorker who lost her brother in the World Trade Center attack. Lasar would become an active member of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows. Masuda later wrote the memoir, “My War at Home.” Source link

Labour wants to ban left wing members, but they’re taking the fight to party HQ

Support us and go ad-freeThe news that Keir Starmer’s Labour Party is set to ‘proscribe’ (ban) four left wing groups is unsurprising. But if he thought that members were going to take this lying down, he may be sorely mistaken. The Labour purge continues As SKWAWKBOX reported, Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) is set to ban four groups involved in the party. The groups named in the article are: Socialist Appeal. Labour in Exile Network (LIEN). Labour against the Witchhunt. Resist (the Chris Williamson-founded group). SKWAWKBOX noted that the banning of these groups would make: mere membership of them an automatic expulsion offence even though they do not…

Court of Appeal overturns members of the Shrewsbury 24’s convictions

Members of the so-called Shrewsbury 24, who were convicted for picketing nearly 50 years ago, have won a bid to clear their names at the Court of Appeal. Two dozen trade unionists who picketed during the 1972 national builders’ strike were charged with offences including unlawful assembly, conspiracy to intimidate and affray for picketing, with 22 of them convicted. Lawyers representing 14 of the Shrewsbury 24, including The Royle Family star Ricky Tomlinson, argued the destruction of original witness statements means their convictions are unsafe. Excellent news! One travesty of justice finally put right after 48 years. Well done to the campaigners and the building workers who were…

Suspended and expelled members win victory over Labour in the courts

Labour members expelled or suspended over antisemitism allegations will have their day in court, a judge has ruled. The decision to take the cases to a full hearing came on Wednesday 24 February after resistance from Keir Starmer’s Labour Party. Speaking about his victory at the High Court, journalist Sameh Habeeb said: I joined the Labour Party after I came to the UK as a refugee from Gaza. I thought it shared my values, but the Party has let me down. I’ve been suspended for over two years and have been gagged from responding to constant attacks on my character. I never wanted to take my own Party…

Black Labour members are set to boycott campaigning for the party

A Labour Party grassroots group is warning that it will call on its supporters to boycott campaigning in the upcoming local elections. This is because of Keir Starmer and the party’s inaction over Black representation. But the rot surrounding this goes much further than just systems and structures. Grassroots Black Left Grassroots Black Left (GBL) is a Labour-supporting campaign group. It formed in 2017. GBL says it consists of “African, Caribbean and Asian socialist Labour Party supporters from all around Britain”. At GBL’s parliamentary launch in 2018, Clive Lewis MP said: We want set places on the Labour’s ruling NEC [National Executive Committee] for black members and dedicated…

A group of suspended members just put Keir Starmer on notice

Keir Starmer’s leadership just became a bit more embattled. Because amid the ongoing “purge” of dissenting Labour Party members, a new group has formed. Its aims? To force the leader’s hand to either end the strong-arming of left-wing voices – or face the consequences. The Labour “purge” The Canary and SKWAWKBOX have been documenting the ongoing issues within the Labour Party. For example, in the south west it has clamped down on some high-ranking officials from Bristol CLPs. In Bath, the party has put a stop to a meeting to elect new officials. It also barred all motions there, except one which (ironically) marked the death of George…

Suspended members are now publicly slamming the Labour Party

There is a growing number of voices now publicly criticising Labour’s ongoing purge of Constituency Party (CLP) members. And it’s surely going to be difficult for the leadership to ignore them, however much they try.CLP: ‘current Labour purge’The Canary has been reporting on the growing number of people the party machinery is suspending. In the South West, it has clamped down on some high-ranking officials from Bristol CLPs. In Bath, the party has put a stop to a meeting to elect new officials. It also barred all motions there, except one which (ironically) marked the death of George Orwell. Then, the party suspended Liverpool Walton CLP’s secretary Alan…

Labour members back Corbyn against Starmer

If Keir Starmer wants to get rid of Jeremy Corbyn, it seems he’s going to have to fight his own party. Up and down the country, Constituency Labour Parties (CLPs) have condemned the Labour leader’s decision to keep the Islington MP suspended. Corbyn was originally suspended from the party on 29 October following his response to the publication of the EHRC antisemitism report. He argued that the levels of antisemitism in the party had been “dramatically overstated”. That suspension has now been lifted. But Starmer has controversially ruled that Corbyn still cannot serve as a Labour MP. CLPs fighting back Starmer told the Guardian: Jeremy Corbyn’s actions in…

UK’s pro-hunting group drops its members right in the sh*t after ‘savage’ video emerges

The UK’s pro-hunting group rushed to defend its members after a ‘savage’ video of a deer hunt emerged. Unfortunately for hunters, the Countryside Alliance’s defence of the horrifying scene that unfolded in the video has only dropped its members further in the shit. “Blatant cruelty” As the Times reported, the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) captured the incident on 1 October. The video shows hunters from the Devon and Somerset Staghounds (DSSH) pursuing a red deer across Exmoor. Describing the scene, LACS chief executive Andy Knott asserted: This is animal cruelty at its most shocking. The stag is clearly exhausted and suffering. It would have been running for…
