Ex-Pence Aide: Stephen Miller’s “Racist Hysteria” Made It Harder for Afghan Allies to Get Visas

As thousands of people in Afghanistan attempt to flee the country before the United States’ withdrawal on August 31, we look at how the Trump administration made it much harder for Afghans who worked with the U.S. to apply and receive what is known as a special immigrant visa, or SIV. Oliva Troye, a former top aide to Mike Pence who resigned in protest, has placed the blame on Trump’s xenophobic adviser Stephen Miller, saying he peddled “racist hysteria” in White House meetings about bringing Afghan allies to the U.S. “Stephen Miller would say, 'Well, these are terrorist cells in the making if you bring them here,'” says…

The mainstream media’s depiction of van life is racist, classist and sexist

Support us and go ad-free“We haven’t done this because we have no other options. We’ve done it because it’s a better way of life,” 33-year-old Ailsa Gardner told the Mirror. After paying stupid amounts of rent on penthouse apartments, Gardner and her partner now live in a converted school bus. Their alternative way of living earned itself pride of place in 20 August’s The Sun, too. The newspaper said of the couple: with their rent costs halved, they gained the freedom to spend more of their lives on the road. The mainstream media is no stranger to covering stories on van life. There’s also 34-year-old Amy Nicholson, who dipped…

Britain is institutionally racist – it shouldn’t fall on Black footballers to point it out

Support us and go ad-freeContent warning: this article contains descriptions of racist language The disgusting racism that followed England’s Euro 2020 final isn’t just proof that football is racist. It’s yet more proof that the UK itself is institutionally racist at all levels. And it shouldn’t have to fall upon young Black footballers to point this out, but this is exactly what’s happening. The Tory government continues to do what it is does best. It gaslights the nation, pretends to be disgusted by racism, and all the while actively allows racism to thrive. Priti Patel previously encouraged racist football fans when she said that it’s “a choice” for…

Knife Crime Prevention Orders: yet another tool for the racist police state

Support us and go ad-freeOn 7 July, the government announced that London’s Metropolitan Police will begin trialling new Knife Crime Prevention Orders (KCPOs). The pilot will last for 14 months. Thereafter, the Home Office will review the results before deciding whether to roll out KCPOs across England and Wales. The Home Office states that KCPOs are intended to “turn young people away from a life of crime and protect them from potential exploitation from criminal gangs”. But campaigners have raised concerns that rather than protecting them, the new orders will enable further surveillance and criminalisation of vulnerable young people who already experience over-policing. What are Knife Crime Prevention…
