Almost a quarter of a million people waiting more than a year for NHS treatment

The number of people waiting more than 52 weeks to start hospital treatment in England is at its highest level since 2008, new figures show. Data from NHS England shows 224,205 people in December had been waiting more than a year – the highest number for any calendar month since April 2008. One year earlier, in December 2019, the figure was just 1,467. The figures also show that a total of 4.52 million people were waiting to start treatment at the end of December – the highest number since records began in August 2007. NHS dental patients told to ‘pay private fees’ if they want treatment

Some NHS dental patients are being asked to pay for private appointments “if they want treatment”, while others face two-year waits for appointments, a watchdog has warned. Healthwatch England was contacted by one patient who was offered a procedure for £1,700 which was £60 on the NHS. Another was told that their odds of successful treatment would increase substantially if they were willing to pay for private care. More patients enduring long waits for NHS treatment

The number of people having to wait more than 52 weeks to start hospital treatment continues to rise, new figures show. Across England, 139,545 people had waited more than 52 weeks to start treatment as of September this year – the highest number for any calendar month since September 2008. In September 2019, the figure was just 1,305. The data from NHS England also shows 1.72 million people were waiting more than 18 weeks to start treatment in September.
