White community leaders must respond to the huge numbers of white people voting for Trump

Whatever the result of the US election, white America has once again chosen Trump’s fascism. An exit poll from the New York Times used research carried out by Edison Research to put together a picture of gender and race differences in voting.Of course, exit polls only provide a snapshot of elections. There will be updates to these numbers as vote counting continues. There are, however, some insights we can pick up here with some confidence. Juan González: The Media Has It Wrong. Record Latinx Turnout Helped Biden. White Voters Failed Dems

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden appears to be inching toward victory as counting continues in several key states that could put him over 270 electoral votes, the threshold needed to win the Electoral College and take the White House. President Trump and his supporters, meanwhile, have attacked the process and falsely claimed Democrats are stealing the election, and the Trump campaign has launched a barrage of legal challenges in swing states related to ballot counting. With the results closer than many pollsters had predicted, Democracy Now! co-host Juan González says “a false narrative” is taking root that Latinx voters were primarily to blame for the weak Democratic result.…

Donald Trumps’s flirtation with white supremacist militias is a tried and tested fascist tactic

Donald Trump and his cronies have been increasingly cosying up to white supremacist militias since the beginning of his presidential election campaign. Earlier this year, Trump’s son refused to condemn the actions of self-described militia member Kyle Rittenhouse, who shot dead two people at a Black Lives Matter protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Rittenhouse was a Trump supporter. When asked about Rittenhouse in an interview, Trump Jr remarked: “We all do stupid things at 17”. During his first presidential election debate, Trump was asked whether he condemned white supremacists, but he didn’t. Instead Trump called on known hate group the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by” because…

This election season, Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza says President Trump is “stoking fires he has no intention of controlling” and inciting far-right extremists. She was recently approached by the FBI after agents found her name on a list in the home of a white supremacist in Idaho who was arrested on weapons charges. “Racial terror has always been used as a form of control, particularly during periods of people fighting for social change,” she says.
